What is the best alternative medicine for relieving SI joint pain?
I've been suffering with SI joint pain for sometime now, with numbness and pain in my leg (for 6 weeks). I had X-rays and an MRI which didn't reveal anything more than slight swelling in my SI joints. My orthopedic doctor gave me some medicine to reduce the swelling and prescribed physical therapy. Therapy isn't helping much, nor did the medicine. I have another appointment with my ortho. doctor who I suspect will be recommending injections to reduce swelling/pain. So with all that being said, I'm about ready to give up on traditional medicine...and try something else or just suck it up and hope it gets better. Anyone had similar experiences or any suggestions?

- Take MSM and make sure that its in the purest form ex. 99.9% pure, and vitamin C. Get it at your health store. Increase the MSM amount until the pain is gone and the slowly cut back every to find the break even point of your pain level. Start at 3,000 Mg's three times a day. MSM is safer than water. Its sulfur, an element we lack in our diets and our bodies need. Used for pain relief, arthritis, and builds collagen. I know some people that needed up to 20-30,000Mg's/day to get pain relief. Start vitamin C, 2,000Mg's a day and increase daily until poop is loose and cut back until your bowel movements are normal. Get off the toxic pain relievers and meds when you feel ok. It worked for me.
- A male with an SI problem? Might be time to follow up with a rheumatologist to rule out ankylosing spondylitis. You might be sent for a bone scan... If this is the case, you can talk to the PT about a TENS unit for long term use. Other alternative therapies include "cranio-sacral" and accupuncture...I don't do this myself, so I can't tell you more about it's effectivness.
- try an osteopathic medical doctor who can manipulate your SI joint back into place
- It may be time to see your family Chiropractor. Best wishes and good luck.
- there is no best medicine. The best medicine is the one that works best for you. Each person needs something different to help find a cure. Find a chinese herbalist in town and have him do a pulse diagnosis. That will get you started. Then find the reason for your problem. You did or thought something that brought your body out of balance. It's up to you to find it and fix it.
- wow...this is exactly why I went to a chiropractor..and I didnt even believe in that before..last summer I messed up my SI and it caused pressure on the L4 nerve in my lower back..causing numbness on the top of my left thigh...I was really scared and in so much pain..eating advil and laying on ice for hours and hours...I could barely move...being a fitness instructor, this made life tough..went to someone highly recommended and told him I was skeptical...he was very patient and sounded like he really knew human antatomy..so I let him adjust my back....the pain went from a 9 (five days of 9's) to a 4 the next day..to a 2 and a half the following day....where it stayed for a while..the numbness took weeks to abate and took all my patience because I couldnt work out much....but it did finally go away..he adjusted my lower back 4 times that month..now I only go when I feel things tightening up....now I dont know why your SI is messed up..and I dont pretend to know anything about medicine...but this worked for me...but please be careful..dont do anything that will make you worse...
- It really makes me sad/upset to hear your story. I am positive that your local chiropractor will be able to help you with your problem. Not to mention that it is on of the most inexpensive types of healthcare available! best of luck.
- I can probably help you with the SI joint pain. What you are describing is sciatica though. SI joint pain is usually caused by the hip being misaligned. Most of the times the pubic bone has gone in an inferior direction. If you get adjusted it should relieve the pain quickly. I don't use the manual snapping, popping or cracking chiropractic. I use an instrument which gently puts the bone back into place. Send me an email to chirodr@verizon.net if you are interested in getting better.
- The 1st thing you need is a correct diagnosis, the symptoms that you have are no related with a SI joint problem. They seem to be a sciatic problem. ( The MRI report is not conclusive; physical exam is the most important diagnostic method here). If your definitive diagnosis is a SI swelling, the best option at this point is local shots with steroids and anesthetics. Another important thing: Stop sports and long walks, your joints need some rest. I'm sorry I do not believe in alternative medicine here.
