Joint Pain

What are strong joint pain medications thats safe to be used while one is on COUMADIN?

My mom has joint pain, but she is also on COUMADIN (anticoagulant). The problem is that every time she finds medication that helps the pain subside, the doctors tell her to stop using it? They keep telling her to stick to Tylenol, but it does nothing for the joint pain. Any suggestions would be appreciated. In pain

  1. there so shit out that does work the best adv. find out what cause and start there
  2. Call around to your local pharmacists. They'll talk with you and come up with some options at no charge...
  3. She needs to tell them the Tylenol isn't working for the pain and let them decide what else she can take. My husband is on coumadin too and I realize that a lot of meds have an effect on it but there should be something they can give her.
  4. They EVENTUALLY let my cousin who was on Coumadin have darvocet and then vicodin. They didn't like it one bit that she was on it either, but they finally gave in (and she was on dialysis too!).
  5. What about a morphine patch? If she is in chronic pain, this could be an option...there are other meds delivered this way, and for the life of me I can't recall them, but it's supposed to block pain w/out as much "insult" to the body.
  6. Anyone on Coumadin cannot use any of the nonsteroidal anti-inflamatory medications, which unfortunately includes ibuprofen, naproxen, toradol, etc. First of all make sure that she is scheduling the tylenol. Don't wait until the pain is apparent to take the medication but take at scheduled times throughout the day, 650 mg every 4 hours or 1000 mg every 6 hours. If this doesn't help go to the doctor to request stronger treatment. Normally the next step up would be Tylenol #3 or Vicodin. Many doctors are reluctant to start opiate drugs. They have a risk of dependancy, but the risk is low in patients who only use them for moderate to severe pain. They should not be used in patients just experiencing discomfort. Talk over the risks and benefits with your doctor.
